We have learned about ongoing assessments for the last couple of semesters in different classes, but this chapter goes into a more in depth perspective of assessments. This chapter talks about classroom assessments and that they include everyday conversations, observations, review of classroom work, as well as tests that may have been taken. As teachers we need to use the information we have gathered from our assessments wisely. This is because if we see a student who is doing poorly in one subject area we do not need to ignore it. Ignoring the problem could cost you your job, funding for your school and classroom, as well as your school closing.
Also as teachers we need to use many different types of assessments and not just rely on one type to base a decision off of. To better help our students we need to get to know them and their backgrounds. By getting to know about who they are can help with making the subject matter interesting to them.
We have also learned throughout our semesters here at Southern that we need to ask lots of questions. We also know that we need to ask open-ended instead of closed-ended questions. By asking open-ended questions this will allow for getting to know the students on a deeper level, and how deep their knowledge of the subject is. If we keep things consistent for our students we have a better chance of keeping them interested.
As I have learned throughout this chapter it is important to pay attention to conversations you have with your students. These conversations can be a big help when it comes time for assessments of your students as individuals as well as when they are in groups.

I totally agree with you on what you said about getting to know our students, but I also think that it is equally important that we include their parents as well. Parents can be a vital role in learning about our students, because who knows a child best? Their parents.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of the descriptions of the different assessments. Not only does these assessments give us insight about our students, but we are able to monitor their progress. And at the end, we can show them our they have done.
